A Better Man by Leah McLaren

A surprisingly brilliant, touching and funny read given the dark topic of marital breakdown

The Book focuses on the marriage of Nick and Maya and how it has been struggling since the birth of the twins.

Nick decides he wants out but once he realises how much that will cost he looks at the alternative offered to him by a lawyer friend to become A Better Man and get Maya to be more self-sufficient which would mean the courts would see the case differently

But as with the best laid plans things start to go squiffy when by being the man he thinks he ought to be he finds himself falling in love with Maya all over again.  It all seems to be going well again until Maya finds out exactly what he’s planning.

There’s a couple of really good twists in this book and a fair amount of light heartedness.

The book is really easy to get into and difficult to put down.

It’s light hearted even with its more serious undertone and I think a lot of people can relate to parts of the story, especially how relationships change when the kids arrive.

I think it’s a brilliantly written book that takes a good hearted poke at modern marriage and wouldn’t hesitate to read it again!

A Better Man by Leah McLaren is published by Corvus Books and is available in all good book stores and online. RRP £7.99

  1. I'm not usually tempted by a book like this but after three heavy reads in a row I need something lighter! I will add it to my goodreads!

  2. At first I was like, a book about divorce? Oh no! But then I realized that the story has a twist and that the main character fall in love with his wife again. That is a good thing, in my opinion! 🙂

  3. This sounds very familiar lol. Relationships do change over time and sometimes the individuals so not so it causes issues. Relationships change with kids, money, jobs, etc and it can be overwhelming. I love that this is lighthearted but accurate to alot of people.

  4. Nice to see another book blogger in the group 🙂 I think I would both love and hate the character Nick. I'm in the mood for something like this so I'll add this to my wishlist 🙂

  5. I enjoy books that are easy to get into and hard to put down. Now that school is out for the summer, I really plan to get through a book a week. I have a huge list of books on my wishlist!

  6. This is the type of book I'll read. Sometimes people don't know that a simple change in their behavior or how their treat others in General can change their attitude toward them … I'm not married yet but it applies to every aspect of life. Good review:) thank you for not spoiling the end lol
