Today I am joined by the lovely Maggie Way, who has kindly done this wonderful interview for us!

Maggie Way is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the Entangle Me Series. She writes stories with heat, humor, and lots of heart.

Hi, Maggie! Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about Heart of Thorne.

Thanks for having me! So happy to be here. I hail from the sunny Sydney down in Australia. By day I work in government administration, and by night I’m a romance writer. I’ve loved romance books ever since I could remember – whenever I go to the library, I run straight to the romance section stack them right up. That’s how I got into writing – I would be reading these books, or watching a movie, and I would always think to myself ‘I would have ended the story that way’, or ‘no, the heroine should not have done that!’

You know, things like that. Eventually, I had a ton of ideas that I didn’t want to keep in my head anymore so here I am. My ideas are now on paper, and I’m having a great time.

Heart of Thorne is very much my passion project, and convinced me to want to pursue writing as a career.

The best way I would describe this book is The Notebook meets Dynasty – you’ve got the tragic love story, mixed with the family and social intrigue. Brother against brother, death threat after death threat, love triangles, rectangles even. It’s all sorts of entertaining page-turning drama, romance and heat. But at the heart of it, is a beautiful love story that you want to root for.

The story in a nutshell: After a tumultuous college romance Mia Winters thinks that love has passed her by. But when her old flame, Roman Thorne, comes back into her life with their past baggage and a new fiancé in tow, will Mia rekindle the spark or resist the passion she still feels for him?

The ultimate question I pose with the book is: what would your morals be worth in the face love?

I think what makes my book unique is that it’s timeless, yet fresh at the same time.

Where did the idea of the Publishizer campaign come from and what do you hope to achieve with it?

Having been an indie author for almost two years now, I have enjoyed learning about the publishing industry and how to market myself, in the most competitive genre. I am looking to take things to the next level and further my career by landing a traditional book deal.

I was in the middle of looking at publishers and agents to query, when I came across a mention of Publishizer in the Writers and Artist’s Yearbook.

They act as sort of a crowdfunding platform, with an exclusive focus on authors.

In a nutshell, if I can sell at least 1000 copies, they will pitch the book to the top five publishers which would be an absolute dream of mine.

Going down this route really appealed to me because it allowed me to not only generate early interest – and funds – for my book by appealing to the audience I currently have, but it could potentially shortcut the process to getting signed instead of going through the traditional query process. Not to mention they have amassed top contacts in the publishing industry.

Can you tell us a little bit about your USA Today Bestselling Entangle Me series?

This was a fun distraction while I was in the middle of writing Heart of Thorne. It was really an excuse for me to blend what I love – travelling and romance! The novella series is about Lacey Ryan, a wedding planner based in Sydney who is due to walk down the aisle herself. Without spoiling anything, she doesn’t quite make it. Instead, she’s offered the chance to plan weddings around the world, and that’s what each book in the series is based on – a different city. If there’s anything who loves a more light-hearted feel good romance, then this is for you.

What’s the biggest reason why people should pledge on Publishizer?

I think apart from asking my readers to support my new project, I want to be the first indie fiction author to land a big-time book deal via crowdfunding. If my campaign is successful, I vow to give back to the writing community and educate struggling authors on how to make it in this tough industry.

What can new readers expect from Heart of Throne? And are there any surprises in store for your existing readers?

Heart of Thorne is a homage, or love letter, to my favorite novels like The Notebook, Bridges of Madison County, Bared to You, and Fifty Shades of Grey. It is a suspenseful, plot-driven, exhilarating, and sexually charged adventure that sweeps you along with the heroine.

Romance drama lovers won’t be disappointed!

As for my existing readers, they will be getting my signature style of writing but more – Heart of Thorne is my debut full-length novel. My beta readers love the book, so I hope my readers will love it equally as much.

What else are you doing to celebrate the launch of the book?

I’ll be providing live updates to my readers, as well as offering giveaways – subscribe so you don’t miss out!

Where do you get your inspiration from and what does the planning process look like for you?

For me, each of my books started with an idea or question I wanted to explore. A lot of them either come to me randomly, or when I’m reading a book or watching a movie, or because of something that happens to me in life.

With Entangle Me, it was the idea that life after heartbreak can still be beautiful and full of zest.

With Heart of Thorne, it was ‘What would your morals be worth in the face of love?’

Once I have an idea that I desperately need to bring to life, I start planning the story, characters around it.

What was the last book that you read and what did you think of it?

At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks. I’m a sucker for his stories, and he is probably a small handful of authors that would interest me in reading books set in rural settings. This was a good sequel to True Believer, but only those who enjoy Spark’s signature brand of melodrama would enjoy this.

What’s next for you? What can we expect to read in the future?

I’m currently working on follow-up novels to Heart of Thorne, as well as some stand-alones which are still in the draft process.

How do you get the word out about your work and where can people follow you?

I’ll be primarily promoting the book to my mailing list of 16,000 readers and doing rounds on social media.

If you wish to get all updates about the book, including exclusive giveaways and discounts during the launch, subscribe here.

Even if you can’t support the campaign, you can still ensure Heart of Thorne gets funded and purchase your own copies at a later date. Share the campaign with friends and family, on your social media, and with your book clubs and writing groups.

Remember Goodnight Moon?

A newly republished work by the same author made its debut at Carilion Children’s for Thanksgiving.

For Carilion Children’s youngest patients this Thanksgiving came a special treat – a newly republished Margaret Wise Brown book, and a pair of accomplished leaders (and moms) to read it to them.

Carilion Clinic president and CEO Nancy Howell Agee and Hollins University president Pareena G. Lawrence spent their Thanksgiving morning reading to patients at Carilion Children’s hospital. In addition to reading Brown’s perennial favorites Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny, the two leaders introduced the children to Four Fur Feet.

“We wanted to make this Thanksgiving just a little brighter for our patients and their families,” said Agee. “It’s difficult being in a hospital, and especially during a holiday. Brown’s books have been a comfort to children for many decades and our patients were pretty excited to hear Four Fur Feet.”

Thanks to a partnership between Carilion and the non-profit Turn The Page, and another partnership between Turn The Page and Hollins University every child born at Carilion will receive the book during the next year. Hollins University, which is Brown’s alma mater, is the repository for her hundreds of manuscripts, and made the Four Fur Feet text available to be published.

“We know that children who are read to early in life become better readers – better learners – as they grow,” said Lawrence. “I’m thrilled that our partners at Turn The Page have made it their mission to get books into the hands of the 3,000 babies born at Carilion every year.”

Turn The Page’s mission is to increase awareness of the benefits of reading with children from birth and to provide every child born in the Roanoke Valley with his or her own home library of books during the first three years of life.

“Reading aloud is a simple way for parents to help their children grow,” said Lauren Ellerman, founder and board member of Turn The Page. “The partnerships with Carilion and Hollins are helping us get great books like Brown’s into the hands of families in the region.”

Agee, Lawrence, Ellerman and Turn The Page volunteers finished out the morning by visiting several units of the hospital, including mother-baby and southwest Virginia’s only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, handing out the book to interested families.

Guest Post: A First look at A Butler Christmas by Rahiem Brooks

It’s September 2014 and Rahiem Brooks is sitting in a cell at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia waiting to be hanged. Well, not exactly. It was the eighth, his birthday, though. It’s not exactly how he planned to spend the day. But, then, Rahiem was facing charges for committing a white collar crime, and it was serving a two-year sentence in a federal prison that A Butler Christmas’s main character, Naim Butler was born.

It seems there’s nothing that can stop men from attending federal sentencing hearings without having their necks being wrung like a turkey. This was apparent to Rahiem who had started to devour the Criminal Law Rules of Procedure, giving him an opinion of the judicial system.Rahiem learned that the only potential exception was men hiring exoribitant—and excellent—sentencing mitigation experts, representing their mitigation factors to garner lower sentences. Everyone else was railroaded. Hence, Rahiem built Butler to be the ultimate defendant courtroom advocate. He can’t practice law because he has a record, but a sitting U.S. Senator positively back bites Butler to the President, requesting a pardon, so that he can practice law. That can’t come cheap. Besides that, Butler has other problems. First, he has a son dumped on his lap right in time for Christmas. A seventeen-year-old son that he has never met was not the ideal Christmas gift. Bringing along bad memories from his ex-girlfriend, which creates problems for his new flame, Brandy Scott, a New York Times editor.

Then Sinia ‘the Ex’ pain-in-the-bum, plays the victim to the point that someone has to die. And, the cops don’t have to investigate much to learn the killer, and someone’s life is screwed.

A Butler Christmas is the first full-length novel in the Naim Butler Romance Suspense series, described in a Publisher Weekly review as clunky. “It seems that everyone has an opinion,” Rahiem says when asked about it. He doesn’t seem that bothered as A Butler Christmas is his sixth novel. He has taught Creative Writing, sat on panels at publishing conferences, and has a membership to the Mystery Writers of America. He’s an active publishing consultant for indie authors and publishers.

The Butler romance suspense are primarily set in New York City in the current political climate. The Upper East Side lifestyle is sexy and brings a certain flare for the rich and wealthy.

“When deciding on a location for the novel, I wanted Butler to live in a place that was expensive and like none other,” Rahiem says. “I did my research for the location as I did for the many criminal law aspects of the plot. I called doctors, lawyers, and psychologists to get this plot right for readers. And while Butler lives in NYC in every book of the series, he works a case in another city. In book 2, he’s called to Washington, DC by the president to defend a man killing people on the National Mall and Capitol Building.”

The first book in the series has so far racked up 12 five-star reviews on Goodreads. And other authors have given the tale the thumbs-up. Despite being the “clunky” opening, Publishers Weekly managed to describe the book as having “…well-developed relationships among the characters propel[ling] the story until the addition of suspense…”

The book is on sale wherever books or sold on December 5, 2017. You can blow up Rahiem’s Twitter and Instagram inbox @rahiemthewriter. You can follow him on Facebook @novelistrahiembrooks. Please leave all review on Goodreads and Amazon by December 25. The perfect Christmas gift.

Nipples to Kneecaps by Mandy Brown

Nipples to Kneecaps: To Die or Not to Die with Cancer‘Nipples to Kneecaps’ is the extraordinarily moving memoir of Steve and Mandy Brown who defied Steve’s death sentence of terminal cancer in January of 1986. By making positive changes to their habits and daily lives, Steve is alive to tell his story today through the words of Mandy and her perspective on the events that miraculously cured her husband. The book is a moving celebration of the true meaning of human triumph and courage, the importance of instinct and the imperative of living everyday with joy.

“My dear girl, I have seen many a patient in my time and we cannot help Steve. At best, he has three months to live…” are words that every partner dreads. The crushing pain of shock, despair and the realisation that family life will change drastically from that moment forward are an all too real occurrence of hundreds of families every day: for Mandy it was a call to arms. She could see that there was still a fighting spirit in Steve’s tumour-riddled body, so she hatched a plan that ultimately proved to be the turning point for the couple’s destiny.

Laughing, socialising with only positive friends and family, changing the use of certain words in conversation, and cutting out any negativity in their lives meant that laughter and happiness became the norm. This was just one part of a wild yet simple plan that unfolded over the next two years. Surrounding themselves in positivity, Mandy and Steve created a ‘culture of change’, which they believe ultimately saved Steve.

‘Nipples to Kneecaps’ is the heartwarming true story of a young family’s high and lows following on from a heartbreaking terminal prognosis through to successful remission and their unconventional methods of adapting to day-to-day living with cancer and subsequent recovery through the healing power of positivity.

Her journey is both a way of escaping a seemingly dead-end existence and a chance at rediscovering herself by stepping outside the confines of societal standards. EXCERPT:

I bet you thought I was going to fold. That I wouldn’t be able to resist that fine china-white powder resting right there in the sanctuary of my pocketbook.

But it stays tucked away the entire night, I swear. I ride my bike to the river to get some air. I sit down on the concrete bank and look out at the wilderness just across the water. At the narrow beaches spotted with bushes, fluo-green against the fading sky of late summer.

Here the riverside is wild, untempered. The bars along the water light up, the music gets louder. I go to the bar. As I’m standing in the endless line I can feel someone’s eyes on me. I count to five in my mind and I look up. Oh man, I think, here we go again. And I let myself fall into it one more time because I need anything to get myself out of this emotional hole I dug for myself.

At first, I’m confused. Because the face that is looking back at me is a face I know so well. A face so familiar and unfamiliar. A face I’d seen dozens of times, but not a face I’d ever called a friend. I stared at him as I tried to place him. He smiles back at me amused. The cogs in my mind begin to click. An actor. I know his face from the movies. That series on Netflix about the homicide detective addicted to porn.

I’m not drunk enough to get up the balls to sidle up to him all sassy and shit. But I don’t need to because he comes up to me. He looks me up and down and nods like he’s approving a shipment of the latest iPhone.

“Mind if I sit down?” he says in that Hollywood voice.

“Yes. I mean no. Why not.”

He says he’s here filming an episode where he’s chasing some jewel thief around Eastern Europe. He can’t believe I’ve never heard of his show. He doesn’t waste any time pouring me doubles out of the bottle the waitress brings over. He asks me if I want to dance and I follow him out to the dance floor. He’s a terrible dancer. He’s basically grinding against my pelvis and slobbering on me. Then he’s trying to get into my panties under my dress like we’re not out in the open and all these people aren’t looking at us. At some point, he grabs my hand and leads me towards the car he’s got waiting for him. I’m not good with cars, so I can’t say what kind of car it is, just that it’s shiny and black. The driver drops us off at one of the big hotels where he’s got a suite. He opens the door like he’s a sheik opening the palace gates. As if a hotel room that looks like millions of other hotel rooms around the world is going to make me go woozy with passion.

Pretty soon he gets back to his sloppy kissing. He’s got my dress off and he says he wants to fuck me like Charles Bukowski and I don’t know who he’s talking about.

I’m probably only fucking him because he’s famous, not because I really like him. What’s there to like in an arrogant middle-aged man with a paunch and a lazy eye? And what’s in it for him, fucking a girl young enough to be his daughter.

“Can I take a picture of you?”

I shrug and he takes it as a yes. He asks me to stop covering my breasts and to spread my legs. I feel horribly shy but it’s exciting at the same time to think this famous dude is going to be looking at my pictures later and reminiscing about our time together. But what if he posts them online? I should have said no. Julita tells me I’ve got a real problem saying no. I’m too much of a yes girl. A goddang people pleaser and where’s that been getting me? Not very far, eh? says the reasonable voice in my head. The other voice, the one that just wants me to take it easy and go with the flow, tells me that it’s fine. It’s just two consenting adults having a good time. Isn’t it?

We end up trusting celebrities almost implicitly, as if their fame is guarantee that they’re harmless. We trust them to tell us what’s fashionable and what’s not, how to eat and how to vote. And sometimes we let them fuck us just because they’re famous. And sometimes we let them get away with the worst.

He goes to take a shower and I walk around the room and look at the stuff lying around his room. There’s his passport on the table. I open it up and look at the picture, which looks nothing like him, he must’ve aged a lot in the past few years. I look at the birthdate and do the math. It turns out he’s 52, not 45 like he told me last night. I pick up my stuff and go straight out the door. I feel sick, not the throwing up kind, just the sick dismay of disappointment. Sick at how they think it’s okay to treat you like an empty shell of a person and then got the nerve to lie to you. I think this might be my breaking point. At last, you say.

I’m sobbing into my sleeve as I walk through the lobby and my mascara’s running all over the fucking place, so I sit down for a minute. In a flash, hotel security is coming my way and they’re asking me to leave and if I didn’t feel like a whore before then I definitely do now.

Significantly, who is the unnamed beneficiary Jacques left a large sum of money to in his will and what is the reason her best friend, also Jacques’s sister, Coco, refuses to tell her what he confided to her?

His Guilty Secret is an unafraid examination of the tangled bonds between siblings, the lengths we go to in protecting our wrongdoings, and the enduring psychological effects this has on the innocent…and the not so innocent.

Extract

“What’s wrong? You look ill…Is there something you’ve not told me, something you’ve been hiding from me?” The mere thought of losing him nearly crushed her. He had to be alright. How else would she survive, living for the brief moments they shared and putting her life on hold when they were apart? “Answer me, please! I can’t leave unless I know you’re okay.”

“You mustn’t concern yourself with me. I work too hard, constantly flying to and from Paris and London. I can’t wait to retire; it’s been years since I had a holiday. My doctor keeps telling me I must slow down, but how can I? I love flying and at fifty-two I’m too young to retire…Plus, it is what enables us to meet and spend time together…” As he spoke, the man felt increasingly unwell. His face drained of colour and he knew something was seriously wrong. Still naked with just the towel around his waist, he stumbled towards the edge of the bed and gasped for breath.

“Mon dieu, you’re ill! I can’t leave you when you’re like this! I’m calling reception to ask them to send a doctor to our room… What’s wrong with you?”

She was dialling the number when the man said, “Please hang up! No one can find out about us, we’ve checked in under a false name. What if some doctor gives out my details to Air France? They will pension me off! What’s more, they will discover your details from the hotel. No, I will not take the risk, it’s bad enough that my sister and colleague know about us. My wife and your husband must never find out about us and our secret. You must leave immediately… Please…”

They’d covered their tracks well, but the man knew he wouldn’t be able to protect her unless she complied with his wish.

Slamming down the receiver, the woman rummaged through her bag and pulled out her mobile. Frantic with worry, she dialled 999 and waited for someone to pick up.

Bestselling Author Jane Green Launches Nationwide Virtual Book Club with Unique Twist

Book Club “in a box” makes it simple to host your own book club event – a turn-key event to make life easy for busy women.

Jane Green may be best known for her string of bestselling novels, but now she is devoting herself to not only bringing the books she loves to her readers, but the authors as well.

The Jane Green Book Club launches this month with its first book, Mrs. Fletcher by Tom PerrottaTom Perrotta himself will be going live on Facebook at the same time as the book clubs, on November 16th at 8pm. The event is happening on the Jane Green Book Club Facebook page, where participants will be able to ask him their questions directly.

Green, 49, says: “I am a huge reader, and there’s nothing better than sharing books I love with friends. I’m lucky enough to count numerous authors as friends, and those I don’t know, are usually only an email away, so I’m in a great position to bring them to the readers directly using Facebook Live.”

Lined up in the coming months are authors Jean Hanff KorelitzDani ShapiroKatherine Heiny and Caroline Leavitt.

“I’m bringing people the books I love, which tend to be more literary, beautifully written, with great stories. There will be memoirs and non-fiction too. Whatever I am loving and want the world to know about.”

Why now? Green says, “I’m a middle-aged woman, who finds herself increasingly isolated, and I am not alone. Whether we work, or are empty-nesters, there are huge numbers of women roughly my age who are hiding behind their screens, and finding themselves lonelier than they ever expected to be. I’m on a mission to change that.

Green explains that women can join the book club from the comfort of their living rooms in their pajamas if they want, but even better than that would be to bring their existing book groups, or gather friends and start one.

She’s even producing Jane Green Book Club Kits – essentially a “book club in a box” to make hosting a book club easier. “When you come home after a long day of work and you have ten or fifteen women about to show up for book club, most women panic!” laughs Green. “We’re doing a monthly subscription kit that includes everything you need for your gathering, and it will be waiting on your doorstep!”

The kit includes exclusive recipes, appetizers, and gorgeous accessories for your book club. Subscriptions will be coming soon!
