Review: Devil’s Gold by Amanda McKinney

Devil’s Gold
Amanda McKinney
Publication date: February 13th 2018
Genres: Adult, Mystery, Thriller

Despite being chronically late, occasionally disheveled and a tad disorganized, Dixie Knight is one of the top private investigators in the country, and when a young woman goes missing in the small, Southern town of Devil’s Den, Dixie takes the case. She expected it to be another ordinary missing person case—until Lizzie Meyers is found naked and beaten to death at a local, seedy motel.

While visiting relatives on his two-week leave, Marine Liam Cash bumps into Dixie at the local bar, and his attraction to her is immediate. When Liam connects Dixie’s current case to two unsolved murders in his hometown, he steps in to help find the killer, and keep her safe, whether Dixie wants him to or not.

After another woman is found brutally beaten, Dixie turns the town upside down trying to solve the mystery—could it be the rumored witch that lives in the mountains; the rich, neurotic doctor’s wife; or the perky, blonde receptionist at the local medical clinic?

Time is running out and Dixie knows she has to put the pieces of the puzzle together before another body turns cold in Devil’s Den.

Review

I cannot wait to read the rest of the series….I think that pretty much says it all!

I loved this story! It has everything I love in a good book; a bit of mystery and intrigue, a feisty protagonist and even a touch of romance! It spans genres and I love a book that doesn’t pigeonhole itself.

The story was well developed, punchy and well thought out with great background stories for the sisters. It is also well researched with insight given into the investigative process making the book come alive!

This may be a short story compared to some in this area but don’t think for a second that that means the story isn’t strong enough.  It is! I for one will definitely be reading more of this authors work!

Review: Goodbye Good Girl by Renee Blossom

Synopsis

Her father hid the truth from her. What she didn’t know is how far he would go to protect her.

Kandace is determined, ever since the accident that nearly paralyzed her mother, to get her father back home. He remains supportive, but refuses to let his daughter into his life. Mysterious at best, suspicious at worst, Kandace accepts her circumstances with little choice.
When a threat to her father surfaces, Kandace realizes she has this one chance to protect him and at the same time, discover his secrets. On the journey, her luck turns. Far from home, without money or transportation and time running out, she entertains an offer–an unorthodox proposition from a stranger–that forces Kandace to cross a line she said she’d never cross. It’s possible to save her father, but can she wave goodbye to the good girl she has been and get her own hands dirty? Ultimately, Kandace doesn’t know what secrets her father holds close to the vest. Is she really better off knowing them?

Review

Wow! This story has a bit of everything, family drama, super spies, suspense, action and ummmm something a bit more risque lol!

While making for an intense read I did feel that because off all the themese running through it felt a bit jumbled! I mean this girl goes through ALOT!

It makes for a jumbled story where it is difficult to see the true Kandace which made her hard to relate to!

It definitely has promise to be a really good story but I think there needs to be more done to streamline into a more coherent storyline

Review

The description of this book drew me in.  There were so many different threads to it that I like the look of.

Now, I will caveat that this is a vampire novel predominantly so if you have had your fill then this one might not be for you.  If you love a vampire story then this one is packed with anticipation and high running emotion.

It’s another fast paced novel but not so fast that it makes it spin. Provost creates amazingly imaginative characters and worlds, it was a pleasure to read.

Self-Development Nominees announced for the Business Book Awards

The organisers behind the Business Book Awards have announced five nominees for this year’s Self-Development category. These awards celebrate the best UK business books published between January 1 and December 31 2017 that are designed to motivate new business owners in the early stages of enterprise.

The founder of the awards is Lucy McCarraher, author of 11 books, and co-founder and Managing Editor of Rethink Press. Lucy McCarraher said, “Development is crucial for the survival of new business’, and the nominees in the Self-Development category help to inform both start-ups and established companies alike how to do this effectively.”

The authors represented on this year’s shortlist are experts in a large variety of topics, ranging from raising the profile of a business, to the best presenting skills. Whilst some feature the stereotypes that plague the workplace, others focus more on the best ways to communicate with people. These books also represent a range of different publishers, from Capstone, to Oneworld.

‘Whispers of Hope’ a book of shocking stories, based on actual events, about separated parents struggle through the family courts

I just want to see my child!

‘Whispers of Hope’ Stories based on actual events

‘Whispers of Hope’, six shocking stories, based on actual events are about the lies, deception and manipulation some parents will go to in order to get their own way, be that for money or to stop a partner seeing their child. Names and some details have been altered but the outcomes in court are true.

When relationships end there comes a time of transition. It would be nice to think that parents of young children would put the child first and above everything else, after all it is not the child’s fault that the marriage/relationship has come to an end. All too often the child becomes a pawn in the battle between the two parties who are caught up in such bitterness and anger.

‘Whispers of Hope’ has been written by Charlie Albert to inspire those parents out there, to whom all seems lost. They have no money but neither do they have the knowledge of the court system to help them through the Family Court to enable them to get a fair hearing. At last, here is someone who can help and advise them.

We will read about attempted suicide, accusations of rape & domestic violence. These are all lies with the sole purpose of denying one parent the simple and most important thing in their lives, access to their child on arranged days and times. ‘Whispers of Hope’ is both traumatic and inspiring, demonstrating the simple phrase, that where there is a will, there is a way. It is hoped that ‘Whispers of Hope’ will inspire any parent who believes they will never see their child again and who know that accusations against them are not true, and that, finally there is someone out there who can help them.

Author quote: –
‘This book has been written to give hope and inspiration to single parents, fighting family law cases. The stories showcased are not presented in chronological order and names and details have been changed to protect the identities of those involved for obvious reasons.
I hope these stories give comfort and the reassurance that there is light at the end of every tunnel.’

About the author

Charlie Albert is not a lawyer; he is a parent who struggled to secure residency of his own son. After Charlie successfully achieved this through the courts he made the decision to help others in similar situations. Through diligently learning how the family court works, Charlie successfully brought the truth out of warring parents, ultimately giving a parent access to their child.
A known McKenzie Friend Charlie has successfully assisted in over 400 people in family law cases.

Charlie Albert’s next book, based on actual events, entitled ‘Shadowed Tears’ will be published in September 2018

Author Interview: Shona Kinsella Autho of Ashael Rising

Synopsis

Ashael is a hunter-gatherer woman, apprenticed to Bhearra, the healer and spiritual leader of their tribe.

The Zanthar are invaders from another world who extend their own lives by stealing the life-force of everything around them. They were last seen on KalaDene 200 years ago. They have returned, looking for The Vessel, a being prophesied to hold the life-force of the land.

Iwan is a slave to the Zanthar, descendant of those taken as slaves the last time the Zanthar visited this world. He is sent out as a spy, while his mother is held hostage to ensure his compliance.

When Ashael meets Iwan in the forest, neither realise that she is the one the Zanthar are looking for. The fate of KalaDene and all of its people rests on her shoulders.

Author Interview

  1. Did you have an image in your mind of the world you created, or did it grow as the story developed?

The world grew with the story. I’ve heard it described like walking through a tunnel with a torch – I can see the bits of the world highlighted by the torch (the story) but everything else is a shape in the darkness until I really look at it.

  1. This story sounds intense.  Does writing Energise or Exhaust you?

Mostly it energises me. Sometimes, when I write a particularly emotional scene, I find it draining.

  1. What is your writing Kryptonite?

I haven’t found one yet!

  1. Does your book have a message that you are trying to convey or a moral?

Yes and no. I didn’t set out to write a book with a message, but I think if you read between the lines, you can see a lot about how I think the world should be. I’ll leave it up to the readers to discover that for themselves though.

  1. Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

Absolutely. I guess they might find some elements more difficult to portray but that’s all about craft. I don’t have any experience of engineering, but if I wanted to write a story that involved engineering then I would do my research and run it past people who do know about it.

  1. Do you want your writing to be standalone or do you want to write in a way that connects each book you write?

Ashael Rising is the start pf a planned trilogy so its definitely not a stand-alone, but it also is not connected to everything else that I write. For example, I recently completed an urban fantasy novella that is really quite different to Ashael Rising. I can foresee further stories in the same world, many years after the event of this trilogy though so there’s a definite possibility of more, connected works.

  1. If you could tell your younger writer-self anything what would it be?

Stop waiting for permission and just write.

Shona Kinsella is the author of Ashael Rising, (Unbound, 2017) the first in her series, The Vessel of KalaDene. She is also one of the editors of the British Fantasy Society’s fiction publication, Horizons. When she is not writing or wrangling her three children, she can usually be found with her nose in a book.

Review: Dark Game by Rachel Lynch

Kelly’s gut turned over as she realised the danger she was in. She heard no sirens. She knew that she was simply collateral. To these men who made a lot of money from the suffering of others, they’d have no problem snuffing her out.

After a scandal forces DI Kelly Porter out of the Met, she returns to her home turf in the Lake District. Crimes in the Cumbrian constabulary tend to be of the minor sort, but Kelly begins work on a cold case that shocked the local community – the abduction and brutal murder of ten-year-old Lottie Davies.

Meanwhile, Kelly is also investigating two seemingly straightforward crimes: a case involving an illegal immigrant, and a robbery following the death of local businessman Colin Day. But evidence comes to light that reveals a web of criminal activity beyond anything Kelly imagined. Behind the veneer of sleepy, touristy towns lies a dark and dangerous underworld. As Kelly threatens to expose those with much to lose, she risks paying the ultimate price to get to the truth…

Don’t miss this taut and gripping debut from a crime writer to watch. Perfect for fans for Carol Dwyer, Patricia Gibney and Angela Marsons.

Review

This is a fantastic novel, a web of inter-woven subplots keeps you turning the page whilst the thrilling narrative stops you from putting the book down.  The story line builds at a pace to keep the reader interested but not too fast as to lose some of the gravitas.

I loved this book, the characters were well developed and the depths of their back stories meant that I could really associate with these people and was able to experience their events with them, both the heroes and the villains.

A wonderful perfect touch was the use of the Lake District, an area of the UK visited by many.  Having been there myself and knowing the areas mentioned, I felt closer to the story – I could imagine characters travelling between destinations and this helped me feel part of the story, I was Kelly’s partner in the crime.  I was with her as she moved forward in solving the puzzles and felt emotionally invested in what I was reading!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, everything about it kept me enthralled and I would happily seek out another of this author’s novels.  For those addicted to crime novels, this is a must read!

Author Bio

Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria and the lakes and fells are never far away from her. London pulled her away to teach History and marry an Army Officer, whom she followed around the globe for thirteen years. A change of career after children led to personal training and sports therapy, but writing was always the overwhelming force driving the future. The human capacity for compassion as well as its descent into the brutal and murky world of crime are fundamental to her work.

Review: Hiding by Jenny Morton Potts

Synopsis

A gripping psychological thriller with chilling twists, from a unique new voice.

Keller Baye and Rebecca Brown live on different sides of the Atlantic. Until she falls in love with him, Rebecca knows nothing of Keller. But he’s known about her for a very long time, and now he wants to destroy her.

This is the story of two families. One living under the threat of execution in North Carolina. The other caught up in a dark mystery in the Scottish Highlands. The families’ paths are destined to cross. But why? And can anything save them when that happens?

Review

This one was another one that drew me in with its cover and my instinct from a good cover has to date never let me down! This is such a well written thriller and the psychological genre always gives me chills!

The novel is extremely well written and follows the structure of flipping between characters which can be hard work with some books but it is absolutely not the case with this book.  The way the author builds the story is so clever. She starts off slowly and gradually builds the pace taking time to build the characters as she goes and this is what kept me reading. The faster the pace the faster I read and this book left me breathless I absolutely did not want it to end!

From slow builder to fast paced with a great mixture of character that were well developed with just the right level of intrigue to keep you engaged but not overwhelmed this story is a great read for the cold winter nights and I thoroughly recommend it!
