Our world was perfect––until we broke the law: Don’t go out at night.

Utopian by day, dystopian by night; this is the world I recently discovered. I now struggle with the fact that our whole society has been based on a lie. There’s only one way to change it––conquer the darkness we’ve all been raised to fear.

Live the lie; fight to the death; become a Handler. It’s the only way.

A sci-fi/dystopian novel.

EXCERPT:
“How do you know so much about motorcycles? Did your dad ride?”

She laughs outright at my question. “My dad on a motorcycle? No way. Dad was a mixture of leather, coffee, and books. Not oil, sweat, and grease.”
After lying down on her back, she scoots up next to the bike, checking the rims and spokes to make sure there’s no damage. “It kind of became a hobby of mine after my dad died. Do you know the junkyard off Chantilly? Never mind, of course you don’t. Anyway, I found Harley there when I was looking for some old furniture to decorate our trailer with.” She looks up at me. “We didn’t always live in a trailer, you know.”
I try to hide my surprise. I assumed the opposite. “What happened?”
“After Dad died, Mom became sick. We couldn’t afford to live in our house in the suburbs anymore, so we sold it and everything in it, and found the trailer on the outskirts of town. That’s when I dropped out of school and started taking on odd jobs.”
She says it all with such a matter-of-fact tone, but I sense the truth. It was hard for her. It was more than any teenage girl should have to deal with. But she’s too strong to admit it.
“I don’t know how you did it,” I say.
She sits up, wiping her hands on her shorts. Unconsciously, I find my eyes shifting to her bare legs.
“I didn’t have a choice,” she says. She rises to her feet, straddles the bike, and bounces up and down a little. I can only assume she’s checking the chassis to make sure everything is working properly.
“Anyway,” she says. “When I found Harley, I took her home, researched antique motorcycles, and fixed her up. There’s a shop near the Hollow that sells parts, so that’s where I headed after I got my first paycheck.” She pats her bike fondly. “Never regretted it.”
I watch as she turns the key and the engine roars to life, bringing a brilliant smile to her face. I want to tell her all the ways I think she’s amazing, how she’s unlike any girl I’ve ever met, how I find her beautiful, resourceful, intelligent, and intriguing, but she doesn’t want to hear those things. Not from me anyway.

Publication date: February 24th 2017
Genres: Dystopian, New Adult

Be brave. Be vigilant. But above all, be loyal.
In the wake of a dangerous but successful mission to Yukon City in Alaska, Cassidy Hart now finds herself back in California, at the naval air station in San Diego. Together, she and Chris now face their most terrifying threat yet: nuclear destruction.
Surviving in a world gone nuclear is easier said than done. Faced with the prospect of being wiped off the face of the earth by Omega’s nuclear arsenal, Cassidy, Chris and their fellow rebel friends stage an incredible, daring journey into the Pacific Rim with the hope that they will be able to seize a weapon that could turn the tide of the war in the militia’s favor.
The clock of the apocalypse is counting down.
Choices must be made. Relationships will be strained. True love will be put to the ultimate test.
It’s militias versus Omega. Hope versus destruction.
Where does your allegiance lie?
Choose carefully.

Interview with Author Summer Lane
How does it feel to publish the 9th installment of the Collapse Series – and your 16th overall?
It feels unreal! When I was a kid, I always pictured myself as an author, sharing my stories with readers, but I admit I didn’t really think that would materialize until I was much older than I am right now. I’ve been really blessed – and I’ve worked really hard!
What’s a typical day in your life like?
I do manage a business, so while I do a lot more than simply write manuscripts, writing certainly is the base of everything that I engage in. I just got a German Shepherd puppy named Kona, and she gets me up early in the morning (earlier than usual, haha!), and I’ll start work then. If I have a good day, I’ll be done with work around 2:30 or 3. If it’s a long day, I’ll be working until 6.
What is State of Hope going to be like – and is it the last book in the series?
State of Hope is going to be long, intense and flushed with adrenaline. There are so many secrets to be revealed, so many character plots to be tied up neatly, and most importantly: Cassidy’s conclusion in this apocalyptic war. While Hope is indeed the final installment in the Collapse Series, it is not the last book in the Collapse universe. I certainly do have some plans for Cassidy in the future – they may not be as huge as Collapse, but trust me: I have plans.
How do you stay motivated and healthy in your career as a writer?
I stay motivated by keeping my eye on the prize: I remove negativity from my life, because nobody needs that. I try to surround myself with people who really care about me and support what I do. Staying healthy, for me, at least, is actually really difficult. My profession requires a lot of sitting, so I have to make an extra effort to get up, walk and move. It’s also tempting to snack on junk food working in an office (am I right?). I try hard to indulge only with healthy snacks: I have celery sticks and apples in the fridge, I like cheese, and any gluten-free cracker in combination. I also just discovered baked parmesan crisps. Oh, my heart!
Advice to aspiring authors?
Don’t let anybody bring you down. Never take no as a final answer. Work hard, and it will pay off, one way or another.

Discern – an award-winning and bestselling urban fantasy novel by Andrea Pearson
Nicole put her things down, not wanting anything to be in her hands when she picked up the disgusting book. She reached for it, but hesitated. Already, she could sense warmth coming from the leather cover, and she wasn’t even touching it. Its magical pulses were different from the other items—they seemed to drip off the book like sweat.
Nicole hesitated, but wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t as if something bad would happen, right? She took a deep breath and placed her hands on the book. It shivered under her touch and she cringed, pulling back. The sensation of warm leather made her flesh crawl, and she rubbed her hands and arms on her jeans, trying to get the feeling to go away.
Come on, Nicole. Don’t wimp out.
Without letting herself think about it, she picked up the book and lifted the cover.
A wind rushed over her, blowing her hair back, roaring in her ears. She caught a brief whiff of tobacco smoke before the surge of air reversed and sucked the breath out of her lungs, making her gasp.
The floor under her quaked. The book vibrated. The leather on the cover moved, muscles beneath it flexing. Nicole tried to drop the book, but couldn’t. She was unable to control her hands or fingers. They clenched so tightly, they ached. A shadow covered the pages of the book, preventing her from reading.
What was going on? She gasped again, trying to breathe against the strong wind. She felt someone touch her shoulder, but she couldn’t move. Her fingers still clung to the book. The shadow on the pages shifted, roiled, and turned toward her, the brief outline of a face visible. It watched her for several moments.
Nicole . . .
The voice was soft, deep. A strange yearning inside her made her want to read the book, to understand. To join the owner of the voice, though she didn’t know where or what he was.
The wind slowed to a gentle and familiar caress across her cheek. Familiar?
Then suddenly, it all stopped. The book fell from her hands and slammed itself shut. She backed away, her arms, legs—everything—shaking.
“What happened?” Professor Coolidge asked next to her, making her jump.
“I—I don’t know.” Nicole tried to smooth her hair, but her hands shook too much. She tucked them under her arms. “It said my name . . . and there was a shadow. In-inside it.”
Coolidge lifted the leather book. His mouth popped open in surprise. “You’ve activated a force within it—something alive.” He looked at her, fear and worry on his face. “How did you do that?”
Nicole shook her head. “I don’t know,” she repeated.
Professor Coolidge put the book back on the table. “I’m not sure what to say, other than the book is much more powerful than it used to be.” He peered at her, scrutinizing her. “And I’d love to know why it called to you, why you woke it up, when so many others have not.”

EXCERPT:
“You will help him, if it’s the last thing you do.”

He had to be bluffing. Lifting my chin, I met his icy gaze straight on. “You can threaten my life, but there is nothing more you can take from me that you haven’t already.”
“Oh, really?”
He stepped forward, towering over me. Wow, he was tall. I resisted every instinct to cower or curl into a small ball. His hand shot out so quickly, I hardly felt the pull around my neck. My hands flew to my chest. My necklace!
The captain held up the chain, his eyes wide with victory. It was clear he was waiting for a reaction, but, except for that first jolt of surprise, I was paralyzed.
Everything fell silent except the slap of waves against the hull and the drum of his boots as he walked to the railing. I clutched my arms to my chest. My heart sped up so fast I couldn’t tell if it was still beating. He held his hand over the side of the ship. The back of my throat ached with a pain so great I thought it would tear out.
“Stop!” One hand still clutched my chest, the other reached out toward the necklace.
“Still think I have nothing I can take from you? There is always something, Princess.”
Desperation replaced all courage. “Please stop. I can help him.”
He shrugged.
“Wait!”
He opened his palm, one finger at a time. The gold chain slid down, dipping closer to the waters below.
“Please, I’ll do anything!” I pressed my fists to the sides of my head.
He drew his fingers in, closing them around the chain. The necklace dangled safely.
I dropped my arms in relief. “Thank—”
With one slow, deliberate move, he opened his palm.
The chain slipped through his fingers.
“No,” I cried, running to the railing. My necklace had disappeared into the roaring waters below. Lost forever.
I choked on the air I strove to inhale. “That was… that was the only thing…” The sound of my heartbeat thrashed in my ears before every emotion was washed away. Every muscle in my body tightened and my eyes twitched as they narrowed. I turned mechanically to face the heartless brute. My face expressionless, my feelings numbed. He would pay for what he’d done.
“You are in no position to negotiate. Make no more requests or the next thing I drop in the water will be prisoners. One. By. One.” He dictated to me without one ounce of regret for what he’d just done. Turning just as easily, he shouted orders behind him. “Ahmed, bring her.”

One God – The Will to Power by Kata Mlek

Title: One God – The Will To Power

Author: Kata Mlek

Genre: Dystopian, Technothriller, Science Fiction
Miran Zyelinski has had enough of ethics and laws getting in the way of progress.
Nothing—not the government, not the church, and certainly not lesser men—will hold back Miran’s vision for humankind: immortality.
Miran will need wealth, brilliance, and ruthlessness to achieve his goal. Andreas can provide wealth, but must be paid in his own currency, and his price is high. Satia has brilliance and ruthlessness to match Miran, but their mix is volatile.

Opposed on all sides, Miran will not waver from his goal of immortality. The question is not whether he will succeed, but who will be left alive when he does.

Based on real-world developments in biology and genetics, this technothriller rolls relentlessly through unexpected twists and continuous shifts of power, culminating in a tempting, disturbing, and altogether-too-likely vision of the future, where one corporation gains almost total control over the world.
Book 1 of 3. Includes The Genesis Files, bonus micro-fiction and art from the world of One God.

Note: contains strong language and some disturbing scenes. For mature readers only.

Excerpt

They entered the main hall. Miroslav felt a bit irritable, as he often did at this kind of event—so many people, so many stupid ideas. The world would be so much better a place if there were just fewer idiots. Unfortunately, TransAgra was rife with feeble-minded, second-class scientists. Good thing our days here are numbered, he thought.
He stopped for a moment and looked around.
“Who are you looking for?” asked Sylvia.
“A friend.”
“What friend?”
“Let’s just say he’s our ticket to the big time.”
“Which one?”
“Him—Andreas Maes,” Miroslav said, nodding discreetly to their right.
An attractive man—flanked by two tall, well-dressed women—stood talking to one of the TransAgra professors, a co-worker of Miroslav’s whom Sylvia knew by sight and didn’t like. The guy was steeped in a polite hatred of eastern nations, which was why the two of them—Sylvia and Miroslav—hadn’t been able to move up within the Austrian science company. The scientist was mostly focused on the girls, though Maes was ignoring them. He seemed not to really be listening to the conversation, his attention wandering around the room instead. Finally, he spotted Miroslav and his gaze rested there. He blinked almost unnoticeably, subtly signaling that his friend should come over and interrupt the conversation, which he clearly wasn’t enjoying. Miroslav got the message.
“Let’s go!” he said, moving toward the group, but Sylvia didn’t follow.
“Why are you getting involved with that psycho?” she hissed.
“Come!” Miroslav snapped. He grabbed her elbow and dragged her. She resisted, and he squeezed her arm more firmly. “Sylvia, stop making a fuss and let’s go!” he ordered in an icy tone.
“I hate him!” she said quietly. “I don’t want you hanging out with him!”
Miroslav sighed.
“I’m not hanging out with him,” he said.
“I don’t like the way he’s looking at you—like he’s looking at prey.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, I’m not gay.”
“I don’t like that you guys have made plans behind my back!”
“Don’t you trust me, Sylvia?” Suddenly he was calm and empathetic. He looked her in the eye, smiling slightly. “I would never agree to anything that might hurt you or jeopardize your career, or even make you uncomfortable—really.” He released her elbow and stroked her arm. “Relax,” he said. “You have to give something to get something, that’s how it works.”
“Fuck you!” Sylvia said, and Miroslav laughed.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she said. “Let’s just talk to him and get it over with.”

UNCOMFORTABLY REAL FICTION
I began my writing career in 2012 after leaving the IT industry. In Poland, I’ve had several successful novels published by traditional publishers. In 2015, I made the decision to switch to self-publishing and start my international career.

In 2015, I published the English edition of my intense psychological thriller Absolute Sunset.  This was one of the most talked-about books in Poland in 2012, and the English edition has been equally well-received.

In 2016, I published One God—a trilogy of techno-thrillers about corporate control of genetic modifications. Originally published in Polish as a single long novel, the English version was expanded and re-written to create a trilogy with lots of great new scenes.

Now I’m working on another psychological thriller, a brand-new story written directly in English for my English readers.

All of my books cross genres—I like to experiment with different styles to create the effect I want, and to give my readers a unique experience. My Polish background gives me a different perspective and makes my writing fresh, although I feel it’s still accessible—inside we’re all the same, after all.

The Diabolic by S. J. Kincaid Review

A Diabolic is ruthless.
A Diabolic is powerful.
A Diabolic has a single task: Kill in order to protect the person you’ve been created for. “

Synopsis
Nemesis is a Diabolic, a humanoid teenager created to protect a galactic senator’s daughter, Sidonia. The two have grown up side by side, but are in no way sisters. Nemesis is expected to give her life for Sidonia, and she would do so gladly. She would also take as many lives as necessary to keep Sidonia safe.

When the power-mad Emperor learns Sidonia’s father is participating in a rebellion, he summons Sidonia to the Galactic court. She is to serve as a hostage. Now, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia. She must become her. Nemesis travels to the court disguised as Sidonia—a killing machine masquerading in a world of corrupt politicians and two-faced senators’ children. It’s a nest of vipers with threats on every side, but Nemesis must keep her true abilities a secret or risk everything.

As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns there is something more to her than just deadly force. She finds a humanity truer than what she encounters from most humans. Amidst all the danger, action, and intrigue, her humanity just might be the thing that saves her life—and the empire.

Review

A Gritty and violent standalone novel, it can be brutal at times and I probably would suggest it’s not for the fainthearted!

I found it to be well-paced in that it kept my attention and it entertained me throughout.  However, I do have to say some of the killings seemed a bit necessary but hey, it’s the authors book and they’ll die if she want them to!

I’m not sure I’d make comparisons to The Game of Thrones or The Hunger Games as I think every author should be judged on their own merit not on someone else’s so go into this story with an open mind or you won’t let the story whisk you away into the world of political sci-fi!

I love the plucky young heroine, she’s a fighter and strong, but still relate able despite finding myself questioning whether she was more than super human or even human at all!

What I particularly like about this story is although the heroine comes through it all, it leaves you wondering whether you were actually routing for the good guys at all! The book is so violent that everyone is in someway a little bit bad….I loved that grey area!!

I love that the book ends on a climax, it leaves it up to your own imagination what happens next and I definitely think there’s room for a sequel

Overall, if you’re into Dystopian novels then this is definitely one for you!

About the Author

S.J Kincaird originally wanted to be an astronaut, but a dearth of mathematical skills turned her interest to science fiction instead.  Her debut novel, Insignia, was shortlisted for the Waterstones prize.  She’s chronically restless and has lived in California, Alabama, New Hampshire, Oregon, Chicago and Scotland with no signs of staying in one place anytime soon.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author in return for my honest review.  All my opinions are my own

Review
I’m not normally a fan of reviewing books that are part of a series as I always feel obliged to review the whole series so that you, my dear reader, don’t miss out, but I made an exception for this book because I LOVED the cover art. I’m a fickle reader and when faced with a row of books with little time to study each one I will always pick the cover I like best….which  has varying degrees of success!
But, my book shallowness came through for me this time and I couldn’t have been happier with The Dream Protocol.  I found the story engaging and fast paced and a tale that kept you guessing….and leaves you guessing!!
I loved the theme, it reminds me a little of a Hunger Games style of life with a little bit of social inequality thrown in for good measure. And after the teaser at the end of Book 1 I cannot wait to read book 2!!
The idea of the Ministry is a unique one and the depiction of people buying and living out their fantasies in their dreams could be a glimpse into our own future and the author depicts this life with creativity and flare that captivates the reader.
This book is definitely worth a read and kept me up until the wee hours!
